She was very poor and illiterate but hard worker over all, so she started to work in one of the richest houses of the region with the Gomez family.
A few weeks after working there, Maria fell in love with the house owner, Pedro Gomez. A mature man, he was tall, athletic and handsome, a male chauvinist. He was a rich farmer, the head of the most rich and powerful family of the region, married to a nice woman and with three children.
Maria fell in love with him and they had an affair, sometime after, as consequence of this affair Maria got pregnant.
When Pedro realized about Maria’s pregnancy he left her and forced her to leave the house without saying anything to anybody. With all her hopes and longings destroyed and a broken heart, after a while she returned with her parents so she had to disguise her pregnancy because of their beliefs. And when she was giving birth, terrified, desperate, without seeing any solution, she killed her own son by throwing it to the river without mercy.
A few time later Maria started feeling so guilty and the shame and blame did not leaver her alone, she lost her mind completely. Regretted, crying, she went to the Magdalena River and trying to find her son, she jumped into the river as well where she died.
But this woman’s tormented soul did not disappear; her ghost is still grieving and haunting with terrible crying the entire town. A lonely, wet, pale woman’s silhouette attracts men and when they are near to the river she kills them by drowning them. Her ghost is still haunting the region, looking for her son, threatening the inhabitants of the region, she is known as the horrible spirit of La Llorona.
